How to use glitter dividers (and why some do not show)
A divider is a thin line of glitter - hearts, stars, flowers, bows - to put between the parts of a page, under a heading, or between blinkies and the rest. Most of them are see-through, and that is why one sometimes seems to vanish on someone's screen. Here is how to use them, and how to pick one that shows everywhere.
1 Pick a divider and copy its code
Look through all dividers, or a group of them: love, nature, animals, emo and more. Click one to open its page. Further down is the box Copy this HTML code to your profile or website: click in it to select it all, and copy it. For the black hearts it is this:
<a href="https://www.glitter-graphics.com"><img src="https://dl8.glitter-graphics.net/pub/59/59198hrthuy4syh.gif" width=400 height=17 border=0></a><br><a href="https://www.glitter-graphics.com" target=_blank>glitter-graphics.com</a>The picture stays on Glitter Graphics and links back here; a divider is wide, so the code also puts a small text link under it. Paste it where the line should go: between two parts of your page, under your name, above your blinkies.
2 Make it fit, in the middle
Many dividers are 400 to 500 pixels wide - wider than a phone. Two small additions make one shrink to fit when there is no room, and sit in the middle of the page:
<div style="text-align: center">
<a href="https://www.glitter-graphics.com"><img src="https://dl8.glitter-graphics.net/pub/59/59198hrthuy4syh.gif" width="400" height="17" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto" alt="Black hearts"></a>
</div>max-width: 100% keeps it inside the screen, height: auto keeps its shape while it shrinks, and
text-align: center on the box around it puts it in the middle. More about lining things up is in
How to put graphics side by side, or in the middle.
3 Why a divider sometimes does not show
Most dividers are see-through: only the hearts or stars are there, and between them you see whatever is behind the picture. Of the ten dividers at the top of the list, nine are made that way. That is lovely - the line floats on any page - but it means a divider takes on the color of what is behind it.
So a black divider all but disappears on a dark background - and many people read Facebook, WhatsApp or their whole phone in dark mode. A white or silver one disappears the same way on white. On Glitter Graphics itself you see them all, because the site's patterned background is behind them. Here are the same four dividers on a light page and on a dark one:
The black hearts (top) are crisp on light and nearly gone on dark. Sliver and blue (second) is the other way round: on white only its little blue heart is left. The red crystal heart line (third) shows on both. And the heart divider (last) has a white background of its own: it shows everywhere, but on a dark page it brings a white strip along.
4 Pick one that shows everywhere
- Tell a see-through one: on its page on Glitter Graphics, look between its shapes. If you see the background of the site there, it is see-through.
- For a page you made yourself, you know its background: a black divider for a light page, a white or silver one for a dark page.
- For other people's screens - a post, a chat, a profile someone may read in dark mode - pick one in colors that stand out on both: red, pink, gold, a bright blue. Or one with a background of its own, if a strip of that color is fine.
- Thin is a risk too. Many dividers are only 17 to 60 pixels high. On a small screen, made smaller still, a very thin one becomes a hair.
On Facebook. A divider is at its best on a page of your own. In a Facebook post, Facebook does not always show a very small or very flat GIF, and a line of 20 pixels high may simply not appear. For a post, pick a bigger graphic - see How to post glitter GIFs and glitter text on Facebook.
Pick a divider or read where the code goes
Good to know
- Leave the
widthandheightin the code: the page keeps the room for the line before it has loaded, and nothing jumps. - A whole page full of glitter instead? See How to give your page a glitter background.
- On SpaceHey, dividers between the boxes of your profile work the same way: see How to decorate your SpaceHey profile with glitter.
