"How It Happend?:
The earthquake cause it to happen and the tsunami in Japan was caused by a powerful 8.9 magnitude earthquake whose epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean roughly 250 miles Northeast of Tokyo, 80 miles due east of Sendai. Sudden displacement of the submarine sea floor generated an enormous wave that swept away many houses and modes of transportation throughout coastal regions of the country.

"Why It Happend?:
Japan is right on the boundary between two plates of the Earth's crust. In this case, one plate is moving over the other one. The earthquake was caused by one plate suddenly jumping up several feet, which pushed a whole big lot of water. That water moved out in all directions, which makes it a tsunami.
