Consecration to the Holy Family

O Jesus, our most loving Redeemer, who having come to enlighten the world with Thy teaching and example, didst will to pass the greater part of Thy life in humility and subjection to Mary and Joseph in the poor home of Nazareth, thus sanctifying the Family that was to be an example for all Christian families, graciously receive our family as it dedicates and consecrates itself to Thee this day. Do Thou protect us, guard us and establish amongst us Thy holy fear, true peace and concord in Christian love: in order that by living according to the divine pattern of Thy family we may be able, all of us without exception, to attain to eternal happiness.

Mary, dear Mother of Jesus and Mother of us, by the kindly intercession make this our humble offering acceptable in the sight of Jesus, and obtain for us His graces and blessings.

O Saint Joseph, most holy Guardian of Jesus and Mary, help us by thy prayers in all our spiritual and temporal needs; that so we may be enabled to praise our divine Savior Jesus, together with Mary and thee, for all eternity.

Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be three times. Amen.

Prayer for the Dignity of Human Life

Lord and giver of all life,
help us to value each person, created in love by you.
In your mercy, guide and assist our efforts
to promote the dignity and value
of all human life, born and unborn.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Influenza

Influenza, also called the common flu, is a viral infection that is very contagious. It is spread by droplet secretions when coughing or sneezing. Although the infection is primarily in the lungs, other symptoms of high fever, muscle pain, body aches, and malaise are very common. Every year between five and 20% of the U.S. population gets the flu. In the U.S. more than 200,000 people can be hospitalized from complications, and over 35,000 people can die annually from the flu.

A vaccine containing killed influenza virus is available. Because the virus causing flu can mutate and change over time a new vaccine has to be produced every summer and distributed in the fall so that the most current strains are covered for the winter flu season. This year’s vaccine is currently being distributed and should be available by early to mid October. Within two weeks of vaccination an immune response develops, and vaccinations have been shown to be 60% effective in preventing hospitalization from influenza, and 80% effective in preventing influenza related deaths. The vaccine is administered as a single dose injected into the upper arm.

There are certain high risk groups for which the vaccine is strongly recommenced including all people age 65 and older, residents in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, anyone with chronic heart or lung conditions including asthma, diabetes or kidney disease, women who are pregnant during the influenza season, and young children between the ages of six months and 23 months. All health-care workers and family members and caregivers for anyone who is chronically ill should also receive flu vaccination.

The flu vaccine is made through virus cultured in egg protein and so anyone with an allergy to eggs should not receive the vaccine. Very rarely, people have developed a nerve disease called Guillain-Barrè syndrome. Anyone who has had this complication should not receive flu vaccine and anyone who has a current fever illness should wait until that is resolved before getting the flu vaccine. Flu vaccinations will not reduce the risk of getting other type of upper respiratory infections such as the common cold.
