I heard their voices.
Thats Kai Cortez. He is the bastard child of the son of the head of the Cortez Cabal.
I bought into their lies.
His mother never loved him. Left him the week she gave birth to him. Heard it was because she only wanted money.
I believed their stereotypes.
There is a rumor that she was a witch. All witches are like that. Either they are old hags or young and running around trying to get into cabal pants so they can get power and money. Witches are just lesser beings.
They made me hate witches, thinking that my mother was just another lesser being. But there was one girl who showed me that they where all wrong...
Eight years ago.
"But father why?" I had cried out to him having just been told that at ten years old my father wanted me to begin Cabal operations. I had been excited to finally working with my father like my older half brothers did, until he told me my assignment. "But I don't want to become friends with a filthy witch."
He just looked back at me with the face of a man looking at a disgruntled employee not his own flesh and blood. "So do you refuse this assignment?"
I looked up at his cold icy stare and bit my lip from outright refusing, I knew that this might be the only chance I got to impress him and make him look at me as a son. "what do i need to do?"
Then father smiled at me. It wasn't a warm smile but it was better then the icy stare. He picked up a file from his desk and handed it to me. "Noriko Konsuki, she is your age but also an extremely gifted child. According to her file she just graduated high school at the age of ten and is going to UCLA in the fall."
"Alright so she is smart, but why do i need to become friends with her?" I asked him. My eyes never leaving the word witch in her file, the word i loathed.
"Her mother is the head of the largest pharmaceutical company on the west coast. And the company is the leading expert in supernatural enhancement drugs. That company could either be a powerful ally or enemy and I'd prefer the prior. That's where you come in."
"But how will me being friends with it, I mean her, how can that help create a good ally?" I closed the file and tucked it under my arm.
"Her mother is very," my father searched for the right word. "fond of her daughter. I have heard that the daughter is having a hard time making friends and that her mother is really worried. So if you became friends with her daughter, she may become fond of you and in return of the Cortez Cabal. Then she may be more likely to do business with us. However Noriko's mother hasn't told her that she is a witch, and she better not find out." With hat he sat down in his CEO chair and i knew it was time for me to leave. "One last thing Kai."
"Yes father?" my heart leapt into my throat thinking he was about to wish me good luck.
His face went dark. "Don't let your hatred of your mother affect this assignment. There will be consequences if you do."
My palms became clammy and i began to sweat as my eyes met his piercing stare. I knew he was serious and was afraid of what the consequences was, but i didn't want to know i nodded at him. not knowing what to say, and hustled out the door.
When i went through the door i found my two older brothers lolly gagging around the door pretending they hadn't been listening. I tried to just quietly pass through the lobby and was about to go through when i was pulled up into a head lock and the file was pulled out from under my arm.
"It looks like little Kai has finally got his first assignment" my oldest brother Calin said to me in the tone you would talk to a baby with. Although Calin and Conner were only 6 and 7 years older then me they have always treated me like i was a child, no matter my age. I figured it had to do with the mean things their mother whispered in their ears whenever i was around. I was the child of my fathers affair, abandoned by my mother, to be hated by my step mother and half brothers.
Conner sifts through the file, "So all you have to do is befriend this girl?" he turned the file so his brother could see a photo of Noriko, "this isn't an assignment, its a joke."
"I bet it was because his mother was a witch and witches are a joke. Kai is a son of a witch!" Calin sneered.
I was about to hit him in that smug grin of his when the door to my dads office opened, "My boys!" My brothers smiled at him and Conner "accidentally" dropped my file, spilling papers everywhere. Instead of helping me pick them up he went over to greet our father.
