Cutting is not necessarily suicidal. It sometimes is a way to gain control of a life you don't feel you have any control over. Most young people who cut, do not even do it the correct way to end their lives. It is a problem and they need professional help. Seeing as the majority of people who cut have mental health problems isn't it possible that the emo cutting thing is sadly nothing more than a fashion thing, a pathetic piss take of people with genuine problems. A bit like pretending to need a wheelchair because the latest trend dictates it.
When anybody cuts themself or releases blood, it calms them down.
Emo has nothing to do with harming yourself, emo is emotionally charged punk music and not a label that people use to brand each other.
If she tells you she doesn't know, then she doesn't know. I still don't know why I did, but it happened. Eventhough she might despise you for a while, tell someone about her problem, maybe a school counsellor. She just needs to vent out what she's feeling and talking is a good way to start.
It's hard to stop, it's really hard.
1. Release of frustration or anger. In a "small" way I compare what they told me to those in other countries who beat their chest and pull their hair when someone they love dies. Or someone who has an anger problem and hits the wall with their fist. Another example would be at the very moment you may have learned about the death of someone you love deeply, that initial feeling of intense internal pain and shock.
The women I spoke with live with a similar knot like feeling, (though not always felt, if that makes sense) deep inside on a daily basis or various reasons.
2. Many did it, they said, in a trance like state when they were unable to feel. Being numb inside, cutting and seeing the blood reaffirmed their existence and at lest they were feeling something.
3. One said due to the physical and sexual abuse she suffered as a child, cutting was a way of expressing the dept of the pain she felt. However at the same time she felt she deserved it, but was rebelling against it at the same time.
Cutting usually isn't a suicide attempt, it just means they're really hurting on the inside. Generally it's not attention-seeking. Some people do do it for attention sadly.
sometimes people start cutting just to see what its like thinking oh ill only do it this once but then it gets addicting or they need to continue to feel that pain like if someone hurts them mentally or something then cutting can seem to take some of the emotional pain and calm them down. As every one keeps saying it has nothing to do with emo.. like in a high school that stereotype is used a lot more like oh emos cut but in reality even some of the preps and jocks could cut as well they are no different then emos everyone has their problems and some of them from all different types cut to make those problems disappear for the time being... and also as some said often people who cut have issues in their lives such as sexual abuse, being abandoned, or just something that made them so sad or has been with them throughout their lives and those things along with any other problems big or small that come along just bubble over and push them off the edge and they do anything they can to take their minds off of it...
